What is a Verb? Definition, Types, and Examples

When learning English grammar, one of the most important concepts to understand is the verb. Every complete sentence needs a verb because it tells us what the subject is doing or what state it is in.

Definition of a Verb:
A verb is a word that describes an action, occurrence, or state of being in a sentence.
Examples of Verbs
  • Run
  • Write
  • Sing
  • Eat
  • Sleep
  • Think
Types of Verbs
1. Action Verbs: These verbs show physical or mental actions.
Examples:
  • He plays football.
  • I read books.
  • They think carefully.
2. Linking Verbs: These verbs connect the subject to more information about it.
Examples:
  • She is happy.
  • The weather seems pleasant.
3. Helping Verbs: These verbs help the main verb express tense, mood, or voice.
Examples:
  • She is studying English.
  • They have completed the project.

Why Are Verbs Important?

Verbs are the heart of a sentence. Without them, it would be impossible to describe actions, events, or states. They help readers and listeners understand what is happening and when it happens. A verb is a word that expresses an action, occurrence, or state of being. By learning different types of verbs and practicing their usage, you can improve your grammar and communicate more effectively in English.
