Table Question: Participation in Cultural Activities

The Table below shows the results of a survey that asked 6800 Scottish adults (aged 16 years and over) whether they had taken part in different cultural activities in the past 12 months.

Sample Answer (Vertical Explanation)

The table illustrates the percentages of people in three age groups who participated in six different cultural activities, together with the overall figure for those aged 16 and above.

Overall, younger people were more involved in performances, visual arts, writing, and computer-based activities, whereas older adults showed greater participation in crafts and cultural purchases.

Among those aged 16–24, 35% took part in performances, making it the most popular activity in this group. This was followed by visual arts (30%) and writing (17%), while crafts and cultural purchases each accounted for 11%. Computer-based activities were the least common at 10%. In the 25–44 age group, participation in performances declined to 22%, while both crafts and cultural purchases stood at 17%, slightly ahead of visual arts (16%).

In contrast, people aged 45–74 were most interested in crafts (22%), followed by cultural purchases (18%) and performances (17%). Participation in visual arts (11%), writing (5%), and computer-based activities (5%) was comparatively lower. Overall, performances had the highest participation rate (22%), whereas computer-based activities were the least popular (6%) among those aged 16 and over.

The table compares the percentages of people in three age groups who participated in six different cultural activities, along with the overall figures for individuals aged 16 and above.

Overall, performances were the most popular activity among younger people, while crafts attracted the highest proportion of older adults. In addition, participation in visual arts, writing, and computer-based activities generally declined with age, whereas involvement in crafts and cultural purchases increased.

Regarding performances, participation fell steadily from 35% among those aged 16–24 to 22% for the 25–44 group and 17% for people aged 45–74, with an overall rate of 22%. Similarly, visual arts decreased from 30% to 16% and then 11%, while writing dropped sharply from 17% to 6% and 5%. Computer-based activities also showed a downward trend, declining from 10% to 9% and finally 5%, compared with an overall figure of 6%.

In contrast, participation in crafts rose consistently with age, increasing from 11% among the youngest group to 17% for those aged 25–44 and reaching 22% in the oldest group. Likewise, cultural purchases climbed from 11% to 17% and 18%, while the overall participation rate stood at 16%.
