IELTS Reading: 10 Powerful Tips to Boost Your Score Fast

The IELTS Reading test can be challenging, especially when you have to answer 40 questions in just 60 minutes. Many test-takers struggle not because the passages are difficult, but because they use the wrong strategy. If you want to improve your reading score, focus on smart techniques rather than reading every word.

1. Know the Test Format

  • 40 questions in 60 minutes - 3 reading passages (sections)
  • No extra time is given to transfer answers.

2. Time Management is the Key

  • Time management is the most important factor in IELTS Reading.
  • Try to spend about 20 minutes per passage.
  • Do not spend too much time on one difficult question. Move on and return later if needed.

3. Pay Attention to Spellings

  • Spelling mistakes lead to wrong answers.
  • Always check the spelling of words copied from the passage.

4. Use Either American or British Spelling

  • Both American and British spellings are accepted.
    • Example: color / colour
    • Example: organize / organise
  • However, be consistent throughout your answers.

5. Skimming: Read Less, Search More

  • Do not read every word in detail.
  • Focus on:
    • Headings
    • First and last sentences of paragraphs
    • Keywords and topic words
  • The goal is to locate information quickly.

6. Scanning: Read Carefully for Details

  • Scanning means searching for specific information such as names, dates, numbers, or keywords.

  • For questions about the writer's opinion, purpose, conclusion, or overall message, the answer is often found in the second-last or last paragraph.
  • Pay extra attention to these paragraphs.

  • In Fill in the Blanks, True/False/Not Given, and similar question types, answers usually appear in sequence.
